Johannesburg
Polytechnic was started in
2002, then known as Strathrand
Technology, offering computer literacy courses by a group of
young professionals, who felt that South Africa needed to bridge
the digital divide between the information haves and the
information have nots. At its infancy the college was offering
computer literacy course with the first batch of students
undertaking the course being only six girls.
When the college started offering accounting courses in 2004,
the name was modified to Strathrand Graduate School to reflect
the new status. The first batch of accounting students were 5,
three undertaking CIS( Chartered Secretary Course under ICSA-SA)
and two undertaking ACCA Foundation modules.
In July 2006, the college moved
from Braamfontein where it was felt that there was an increasing
number of colleges offering the same courses and transferred to
Doornfontein in Johannesburg. The college went into Partnership
with
Johannesburg Polytech
Institute, an Independent Primary and High
School by offering high speed internet access to the students
while still continuing to offer computer and accounting courses.

The college invested
heavily in Information Technology by opening a Multi Media Resource
Centre which not only catered for the Primary and High School students
but also internet access to students from colleges nearby.
The relationship of Strathrand Technology
and
Johannesburg Polytech Institute
grew and in June 2007 Johannesburg Polytechnic was born as the
training division of Strathrand Technology. It was felt that
majority of the students who matriculated could not continue with
further education because of reasons beyond their control but mainly
lack of adequate financial resources. Johannesburg Polytechnic was
incorporated on a platform to offer affordable quality tertiary level
education to poor students where fees is kept to a minimum since it was
felt that majority of the middle level colleges were charging expensive
fees to undertake professional courses.
The college concentrates on giving tuition affordably for reputable
international professional bodies chiefly ACCA, CIMA, BCS, CAT, ICB,
ICSA, and ICDL courses in Accounting, Computing and Management.
Future Plans
Johannesburg Polytechnic is in the process of getting accreditation
to offer its own Diplomas and Certificates with the relevant authorities
and sector training authorities.
