Step 1
Medical Aid
For All Students Undertaking Courses
of 3 Months and Above
To study in South Africa you need to be
medically covered for the full duration
of your study. According to legislation,
the medical aid has to be a South
African administered and/or recognized
product paid up to 31 December of the
year of registration. The Polytechnic
advises, amongst other coverage, that
the product include provisions for
hospitalization, medicines &
repatriation of remains.
For Short-term / Occasional /
Semester Students
To study in South Africa, you need to
purchase a minimum of 6 month medical
aid cover; as outlined above. Most
insurance companies will refund the
unused portion of the medical aid cover.
Enquire about this option with the
medical aid company as each company has
different requirements for refunds.
Step 1 is not required by Refugees,
Asylum Seekers and individuals studying
3 months or less.
Step 2, Study Permit
You need a study permit for all courses
which are more than 3 months.The
following should be submitted to the
South African Embassy/Consulate in your
country to obtain your Study Permit, in
some instances these may vary:

A
passport valid for not less that 30
days after intended studies

Administrative fee of R425 (as at
December 2007)

Confirmation and proof of payment
for the Medical Aid Cover with a
South African registered scheme for
comprehensive (day to day and
hospitalization) cover
-
Letter
of Offer from the Johannesburg
Polytechnic stating the duration of
Certificate/Diploma and duration of
study.
-
Medical
and Radiological reports (less than
six months old)
-
Yellow
Fever vaccination certificate, if
relevant
-
Relevant
certificates if married, widowed,
divorced or separated
-
Details
regarding arranged accommodation
while in South Africa
-
Proof of
sufficient funds to cover tuition
fees and maintenance
-
A police
clearance certificate for the past
12 months or longer since the age of
18
-
A cash
deposit or a return ticket to
country of origin.
NB: Some
Nations of African countries are not
required to pay this deposit if their
Government undertakes, in writing, to
cover all costs relating to any
repatriation action that may become
necessary.
Step 2 is
not required by Refugees, Asylum Seekers
and for individuals studying 3 months or
less.
Step 3:
Tuition
Retain your receipt of the payment of
your full academic year’s tuition.
Tuition Fees Must be paid in full and in
advance before any admission letter is
processed.
Step 4: International Administration Fee
Retain your receipt of the payment of
your International Application Fee. This
fee is non-refundable and expires at 31
December every year. The fee is the
same, should your study be for 12 months
or less during the academic year.
Step 5: Clearance Certificate
Take proof of the items listed below to
the International/Accounts Office at
Johannesburg Polytechnic to obtain your
Clearance Certificate

Step 6: Registration
Take your Admission Letter to the
appropriate department/faculty to
register for your courses/programs.

reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
(New Immigration Act recognizes old
Act’s exemptions – but many such
exemptions are region specific)
Categories
that Pay International Fees
Everybody else not mentioned above,
including but not limited to:

SA Taxpayers
(I.e. only pay SA
Tax. E.g. Contract workers or
Temporary residents) The criterion
of paying tax is not sufficient for
a reduction in international fees

SADC Taxpayers -
Taxpaying
per se is not a sufficient
condition for exemption from
international fees.

SA & SADC Temporary
Residents
– If there is an expiry date and if
they are required to renew their
residence status periodically, then
they cannot be considered
permanent residents of the
country.

SA Permanent Resident
Applications under Review (including
those married to SA resident /
citizen) -
There is no guarantee that Permanent
Residence status will be granted.
Until such status is granted,
International Fees apply. Note that
status at registration determines
fees paid.

International
Affiliates
- Enter South Africa
on a Visitors Visa, as such they
cannot register for courses. They
pay an International Affiliate Fee
for their association with the
institution
NB:
Under the current set-up we charge the
same fees to all our students except
that International students pay R1000.00
International Application Fee while
local students pay R200.00 Application
fees.
